There’s no denying that SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali paved the way for regional cinema on a national scale. And in the last few years, films like KGF, Kantara, RRR, and Pushpa, among many others from Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, or Kannada, have managed to put South cinema on the global map. During a brief interview, KGF’s Yash discussed how North Indian audiences perceived South films.Yash stated at the India Today Conclave, Dubbed films became very popular in this country about ten years ago (North India). However, they all began watching with differing perspectives. People used to mock South films. ‘Yeh kya action hai, udd raha hai sab,’ they said (what is this action, everything is flying). That’s how it began, and they eventually became addicted to it and began to understand the art form. The problem was that our films were sold for pennies on the dollar, people did bad quality dubbing, and it was presented in a bad way with funny names.
Kantara is also one of my films. When asked about the achievement of Rishab Shetty’s recent blockbuster movie, Kantara, Yash, one of the event’s Kannada Film Industry speakers, said, Kantara is also my movie.\It’s also my film (Kantara). You said it wasn’t your film, but it is. From the standpoint of my industry, I believe we needed that attitude shift. People have talent and confidence, which is fine, but when you step out and people start judging you and speaking about your industry in a certain way, it takes a lot of effort to break that perception. That [effort] was significant. Back home, when I was starting out in my career, I noticed that everyone started with a negative perception: ‘ours is a small industry, we have a lot of limitations, we can’t compete with the rest of the industries because their budgets are high, they have bigger markets.’ Many people believe that the Kannada film industry will never succeed Yash went on to say that no industry is too big or too small. He also stated that the Kannada industry is now ‘rocking’ because we have begun to ‘believe’ and show confidence in it.
