This year especially, the world cup has been the most competitive. The so-called underdogs have beaten the international powerhouses of the footballing world.
The European and South American teams who have dominated World Cups in the past, have faced equal contention this time from African and Asian teams. Be it, Saudi Arabia who shocked the favorites Argentina or Tunisia who defeated France, Be it Japan who topped the group, or South Korea who defeated the powerhouse Germany with a shocking last-minute winner. But only Morocco was able to convert their triumphs into something big and become quarter-finalists.
This is great for Football, when Asian and African teams do good it increases the popularity of the sport within their respective nations, and the emotion associated with each minute played increases which further motivates younger guys and girls, who are watching at home, to pick up the sport. Also, this will catch the attention of the scouts of big European clubs to find some hidden talented stones that can be polished into fine Diamonds. With the change in the next edition’s format of the WorldCup, more spots will be given to teams other than European and South American teams to diversify the participation from all over the world. This can be a game changer as we already know that these teams can win on the world stage, and may even give more fierce competition in the next editions of the world cup.The underdogs mostly packed their bags except for Morocco but they returned with an appreciation of the whole nation, they made their supporters proud who traveled to Qatar and they took respect from their competitors. What lies in the future for these teams remains unknown, but this year we might have woken up some sleeping giants.Who do you guys think can become the top dog from an underdog???
