The violence began on May 10 when Hamas militants in Gaza fired rockets at Jerusalem, prompting Israel to respond with airstrikes. The conflict has since spread to other parts of the Gaza Strip and Israel, with both sides launching missile attacks and engaging in ground battles.
The UN has warned that the situation is rapidly deteriorating and that civilians are paying the heaviest price. According to the Palestinian health ministry, at least 213 Palestinians, including 61 children, have been killed in Gaza since the violence began. Israel has reported 12 deaths, including two children.
The international community has been calling for an end to the violence, with the United States, European Union, and several other countries calling for a ceasefire. The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on May 12 to discuss the situation, but failed to agree on a joint statement due to opposition from the United States.
The conflict is the worst between Israel and Gaza since 2014 and has raised fears of a wider regional conflict.
