Dunne has insisted on a no-trials policy wherever possible because he believes it allows boxers to focus on peaking for a major championship rather than worrying about taking trials.
The new selection policy includes significant changes and reflects Dunne’s vision of preparing the team for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The Irishman also has a big say in team selection. To begin, the number of boxers chosen for the elite national camp has been reduced to allow for individual preparation. Previously, four boxers per weight category were chosen for the national camp based on their performance at National Championships. Dunne has reduced it to three per weight class. There are 41 men and 36 women boxers in the ongoing camp at NIS Patiala.
The boxers in the national camp were informed about the selection process for the world championships, which will be based on evaluation by the High Performance staff, according to reports. The women’s world championships will begin on March 15, while the men’s world championships will begin on May 1.
The selection process will include three boxers per weight division, according to the new policy. To be considered for the ‘evaluation stage,’ they must meet at least one of the following criteria: previous World Championship medalists, 2022 Commonwealth Games, 2022 Asian Championships, reigning gold and silver medal winners of Elite National Championships.
However, at his sole discretion, HPD Dunne may select a wild card to compete in any of the Olympic weight divisions (seven for men and six for women). The boxers will then be ‘evaluated’ at the national camp. Each athlete will be evaluated and monitored by the BFI High Performance Staff and the HPD. This evaluation will be conducted in accordance with the High-Performance Evaluation Guidelines in accordance with the policy.
The boxers will be evaluated based on six criteria, including their training performance, willingness to learn, continuous improvement, and technique and skill assessment. They will be given scores ranging from very poor to excellent (0-10). Once the evaluation process is completed, the team will be chosen by a selection committee composed of the BFI secretary general, HPD, and chief coach.
Boxers who win gold or silver at world championships will be automatically selected for the Asian Games’ first Olympic qualifier. Any remaining weight categories will be subjected to selection trials.
It remains to be seen how the boxers react to the new system, given that there have previously been controversies over the lack of trials. Arundhati Chaudhary filed a petition in the Delhi High Court in 2021 against the BFI after Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain was given a direct berth to the World Championships. As a result, selection trials for the women’s team for the World Championships, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games were held last year. As all three tournaments had different weight classes, some of the top boxers complained of exhaustion from losing weight.
Selection trials have been a contentious topic in many sports other than boxing. In a recent protest against the Wrestling Federation of India, India’s top wrestlers raised the issue of too many selection trials, which could have an impact on performance on the international stage. Many federations have faced criticism in the absence of a comprehensive selection policy.
