The Opposition grouping’s cracks have been exposed by the TMC and Congress’s inability to reach a seat-sharing arrangement. TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has embarrassed India once again by saying that her party will take on the BJP, the Congress, and the CPM in the state.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has put up a brave front by declaring, “Our doors are always open and an alliance can happen any time before the withdrawal (of nominations).” However, Mamata has distanced herself from India, according to State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, in an effort to avoid upsetting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The TMC secured 22 seats out of 42 in the Bengal Lok Sabha elections of 2019, the BJP secured 18 seats, marking a significant gain, while the Congress secured two seats. This time, the seat-sharing negotiations failed because the TMC was unwilling to give ground and the Congress insisted on having more than two seats for its candidates.
In the Sagardighi bypoll last year, the TMC’s Debashish Banerjee was defeated by Left-backed Congress candidate Bayron Biswas, highlighting the fierce competition between the two allies from India. Later, much to the dismay of the Congress, Biswas joined the Trinamool side.

The ruling TMC may find it difficult to withstand the BJP’s assault on its own, given that it is already in a difficult situation due to the Sandeshkhali controversy. By attempting to take on more than it can handle in Bengal, the Congress has made things more problematic. The national prospects of INDIA in the Lok Sabha elections would be affected by this.
