On February 4, unidentified men attacked and pursued Syed Mazahir Ali close to his Chicago home. Ali, who relocated to the US from Hyderabad roughly six months ago, is traumatised by the occurrence.

Less than three weeks have passed since a homeless drug addict in Lithonia, Georgia, fatally beat another student, Vivek Saini, who had just earned an MBA degree. This Thursday, Sameer Kamath, a student at Purdue University in Indiana, was discovered dead.

The investigators claim that he shot himself in the head. Neel Acharya, a different Purdue student, was proven deceased a few days after going missing, while Akul Dhawan, an 18-year-old attending the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, was discovered dead last month. It was announced last week that Shreyas Reddy, 19, had passed away.

The string of unfortunate events has sparked worries regarding Indian students’ safety and security in the United States. These children are the target of drug users and traffickers as well as small-time criminals, as their parents have paid enormous sums of money to get them to the US. According to reports, some of them are reaching a breaking point where they are attempting suicide or using drugs as a result of the stress brought on by the lack of work options.

The concerning circumstances necessitate more outreach to the students and assistance in resolving a variety of issues by the Indian community and diplomatic personnel in America. They must also increase the pressure on law enforcement organisations to look into the instances quickly.

An unwavering message of zero tolerance for crime can be sent by taking exemplary action against the offenders, especially those wearing uniforms. The Seattle event from the previous year, in which a police officer made callous remarks on the passing of college student Jaahnavi Kandula, demonstrated how widespread the corruption was. The predicament of Indian students deserves more attention from the US media, which is eager to draw attention to any form of hate crime in India.
