A commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba was among the two terrorists who perished in the gunfight. Ten troops lost their lives in two ambushes that occurred in the border areas of Poonch and Rajouri in April and May of this year.

The security forces have responded with a correspondingly strong response to the increase in terrorist activity in these districts. At least 120 people have died in J&K this year from violence related to militancy, including over 80 terrorists and over 25 security officers. In general, there has been a decrease in violence in recent years.
For example, there were 229 less terror events in 2021 than there were in 2018, and fewer security officers diedu201491 fewer in 2018 than 42 in 2021. However, further stringent measures are needed to further reduce the number and establish favourable circumstances for the election process to resume.

The security forces and the J&K government are concentrating not only on neutralising or apprehending terrorists but also on pursuing their supporters. Due to suspected ties to terrorism, four government workersu2014including a doctor and a police officeru2014were fired by UT authorities on Wednesday.
They are charged with aiding terrorist organisations operating out of Pakistan, supplying terrorists with financial and logistical support, disseminating their ideology, and engaging in secessionist propaganda. According to the chargesheet against one of them, Farooq Ahmed Mir, he was paid a salary while incarcerated and was assigned as a teacher while belonging to the Hizbul Mujahideen, an organisation that is prohibited. There’s no room for terrorists or secessionistsu2014that much is evident. A strong stance like this will contribute to the restoration of peace and order, which should allow the much-delayed elections to take place.
