Anurag Kashyap has revealed that the Gangs of Wasseypur flicks, hailed as one of his finest works, are deemed loss-making by their distributors. Gangs of Wasseypur was initially shot as a single film lasting 321 minutes, but was broken into two parts for the Indian market. Viacom 18 Motion Pictures distributed the films before selling them to Colors TV, which they control.
Anurag revealed in a recent interview why he has not attempted to develop a sequel to Gangs of Wasseypur. The director stated that while he has numerous ideas for a sequel, he would not produce it since Viacom 18 continues to call it a loss-making picture.
Tanmay Bhatt was informed by him, There are several stories, but one in particular has enraged me. It is still a loss-making picture for Viacom (distributors Viacom 18 Motion Pictures). In that image, I used all of my goodness from my whole life, yet it had no worth. And we know how much money the film has made. But then they argue we didn’t earn that money, that Colors did. However, who owns Colors? Viacom sold the film to their own firm Colors and stated that Colors is profiting from it. Insider trading has occurred.
The filmmaker also stated that he believes the ensemble cast of Gangs of Wasseypur was underpaid for their efforts. He stated, No one in the picture made a lot of money. Richa Chadha received 2 lakh, Huma Qureshi received 75,000, and someone else received 50,000. People have that type of money. You created a terrific movie for less money, but when it earned money, you should compensate the individuals who worked on it.
