Following a global vote among media representatives, ICC Hall of Famers, former international players, and registered fans, both Kohli and Dar were declared winners.
Kohli won his first Player of the Month award after scoring 205 runs with the bat in October, demonstrating the breadth of his batting talent.
Apart from a brilliant half-century against the Netherlands in Sydney, he produced an unforgettable innings in the stunning victory over Pakistan at the MCG in front of a capacity crowd to kick off their campaign in style.
At 31 for four, Kohli asserted his dominance over the opposition bowlers in a memorable display of controlled aggression, assisting his team in chasing down the 160 targets on the final ball, thanks to his unbeaten 82 off 53 balls.
The India talisman won the award after being nominated for the first time, beating out a field that included South African finisher David Miller and Zimbabwe’s in-form Sikandar Raza, both of whom made significant contributions at the T20 World Cup in Australia.
It is an honor to have been named ICC Men’s Player of the Month for October. Being selected as the standout player by fans all over the world as well as the panel makes this award even more meaningful to me, Kohli said in an ICC release.
I’d like to thank the other nominees who performed so well during the month, as well as my teammates, who continue to encourage me to perform to the best of my ability. Daren Ganga, a former West Indies international and member of the ICC Player of the Month voting panel, stated, Kohli is the quintessential batter. He exhibited tremendous character in overcoming a difficult period with the bat. He scored an unbeaten 49 against South Africa in October, followed by two half-centuries at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
That magnificent knock against Pakistan will go down as one of the all-time great T20I innings. I saw it live at the MCG, and to deliver in such style on that occasion is a privilege only the greats of this beautiful game have. Dar was named ICC Women’s Player of the Month for her key contributions to Pakistan’s run to the Asia Cup semifinals in Bangladesh.
Despite falling short in the knockout stages, the influential all-rounder underlined her importance to the Pakistan cause by scoring 145 valuable runs at an average of 72.50 and taking eight key wickets during the month.
Dar was sensational in India’s historic victory in Sylhet. Batting first, she arrived at the crease with the score at 33 for three and went on to make 56 not out to help them reach a competitive 137.
She then went on to shine with the ball, taking crucial wickets of Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues as the tournament’s eventual winners fell short in dramatic fashion.
