Though his return as Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper gave fans something to cheer about, former India head coach Ravi Shastri admitted that he expected Kohli to lead when Rohit was injured for the rescheduled Birmingham Test against England.
With Rohit out due to a Covid-19 infection, the Indian team was led by Jasprit Bumrah in the rescheduled 5th Test against Ben Stokes’ men. Kohli led the first four Tests of the series. Despite Rohit’s absence, Virat made no changes, even for the lone match.
If Shastri had been the head coach for that match, he would have asked Kohli to lead. I expected him (Kohli) to (lead the side). I assumed Rohit would be asked once he was injured (positive Covid-19 report).
I would have if I were still there. I’m sure Rahul would have done the same thing; I don’t know, I haven’t talked to him, but I would’ve advised the board that it’s only fair that he lead because he was part of the team that was leading the series 2-1.
And he probably could’ve gotten the best out of players, Shastri said in an ESPNCricinfo interview. When asked if doubts about leading the country would have prevented Kohli from taking the pitch for the aforementioned match, Shastri dismissed the notion.
source: Xtra TimeCertainly not. It is an honour to lead your country. In these situations, you must put your best foot forward. Your regular captain is injured and not on the team, so seeing what’s at stake, beating England 2-1 in England… how many teams beat England and Australia in the same year, overseas? Shastri further said.
Could it be possible for Kohli to comeback and lead India again, maybe in the World Test Championship final this year? Shastri, like millions of fans, is daydreaming.
