In 2013, Om Prakash Chautala was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a Delhi court in a case related to the illegal recruitment of junior teachers in Haryana in 1999. The case, known as the “JBT (Junior Basic Training) recruitment scam,” involved the appointment of unqualified candidates in exchange for bribes. Chautala was convicted along with his son, Ajay Chautala, and others. The sentencing brought an end to his long political career, though his supporters continued to stand by him, arguing that the charges were politically motivated.
Chautala was granted bail in 2017 after serving a part of his sentence. Despite his controversial legacy, Om Prakash Chautala remains a significant figure in Haryana’s political landscape.
