This made the SAD a crucial partner for the BJP in Punjab, helping it maintain a foothold in the state, which has been difficult for the BJP to expand on its own. The BJP sees the Akali Dal as a safeguard against the threat of rising radicalism in the region, as it holds the potential to channel Sikh sentiments and provide a counterbalance to more extreme factions​
